WIND CHASER 逐風旅人

for erhu & piano
for erhu, shinobue, gayageum, percussion

Program Note:

Wind Chaser 逐風旅人‘ takes the listener on a musical journey, and tells a story of love, contemplation, and adventure. Like someone running through the hills, trying to grasp the wind, so does life itself elude us. It can slip through our fingers just as soon as we grab hold of it. Composed for Amely Zhou, this piece showcases the expressiveness, the virtuosity, as well as some special techniques of the erhu.

INTERSECTIONS 交會

for erhu, yangqin, cello, liuqin, zhongruan
for dizi, erhu, pipa, guzheng

Program Note:

Taking inspiration from Song Dong’s Communal Courtyard, ‘Intersections 交會’ begins with a melody based in a traditional Chinese musical form: the pentatonic scale. As the piece progresses, the melody begins to be overtaken by other, more robotic rhythms and phrases. Much like the many cities worldwide where traditional customs, architectures and ways of life are being taken over by our modern day technological society, the ideas in this piece continue to change, influence, and fight with one another, creating both harmonies and dissonances. In the end, the basic form of the original melody is still intact, though it has also adapted and changed into something new – something based in tradition, but influenced by the present.

MOMENTS 片刻

for erhu & cello

Program Note:

‘Moments 片刻’ utilizes the erhu and cello to help evoke the many sceneries and cityscapes of Taiwan. Based off of an Instagram feed of a Torontonian living in Taiwan (images from jungle-covered mountains, to towering skyscrapers), and brought to life with these two instruments. The cello and erhu play off one another, referencing the pentatonic nature of Chinese music, but also delving into some of the extended techniques found in both instruments.

LONGING 等待

for erhu & piano

Program Note:

‘Longing 等待’ is a duet composed for erhuist Linlin Wang. DREAM TRAVELER 夢想旅⼈

for erhu, guzheng, harp & Chinese orchestra

Program Note:

‘Dream Traveler 夢想旅⼈’ tells the story of a young Canadian composer who discovered Taiwan in 2012, and how it changed his life forever. How he developed a dream to move and live there, and travel around the island, seeking adventure and new discoveries.

‘Dream Traveler 夢想旅⼈’ progresses through 9 chapters, beginning with ‘Dreams 夢想,’ which depicts the initial awe of discovering Taiwan. It then goes on to describe the forested and mountainous ‘Wilderness 荒野’ surrounding everything, the fast paced and busy ‘Cityscape 城市’ of Taipei, and the advanced and unrelenting ‘Technology 科技’ throughout the island. It continues towards more human concepts such as the ‘Heritage 遺產’ viewed in family gatherings during Chinese New Year, and the deep and unique ‘Culture ⽂化’ permeating every street corner. Afterwards, the ‘Memory 回憶’ of the time living there, as well as the constant ‘Yearning 嚮往’ to visit again bring the piece towards its final chapter. The ‘Nostalgia 鄉思’ of the past decade conclude the piece similarly to the dreams that started it, but developed by every chapter in between.

It was a dream of mine to live in Taiwan, but now looking back after over a decade, it all seems like it was just a dream in retrospect.
